Back Next Week!

I will be travelling over the next week.  I plan to be back up and sharing as usual around the 3rd of December.  Here is another post from 2009 until then!  Blessings

Jesus Christ: Prophet, Priest ,and King--Psalm 24

Psalm 22 describes Christ's prophetic and sacrificial ministry, and Psalm 23 gives us a glimpse of His priestly ministry. Psalm 24 is the Psalm of the Great King. Notice the three in that specific order each showing the three-fold ministry of Jesus. As mentioned, this is a future ministry of Jesus. As the only God/Man, his earthly ministry would follow that pattern of progression. What a triumphant message. "The earth is the LORD'S, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein." Psalm 24:1 Jesus will come someday soon and claim the earth as His very own. And why not, He has shed His own blood to redeem it. This fabulous Psalm speaks for itself as far as Messiah's return. You can almost hear the excitement as the Psalmist focuses on the triumphal procession through the Eastern Gate. " Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in. Who is this King of glory? The LORD strong and mighty, the LORD mighty in battle. Lift up your heads, O ye gates; even lift them up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in. Who is this King of glory? The LORD of hosts, he is the King of glory. Selah." Psalm 24:7-10 Notice the Lord has just came from battle. Also notice His name--The LORD of Hosts. There is no doubt as to who alone fits this description. Jesus Christ--The Son of Man/The Son of God.

Jesus Our Priest

Due to traveling and other responsibilities, I have not had time to get to the blog lately.  I will be out of state through next weekend, December 3rd.  Here is an article I thought that I would share on Jesus our Priest from 2009.  Blessings!  Remember, give God praise and thanks during the holiday!

Jesus Christ: Prophet, Priest ,and King--Psalm 23

The word shepherd is used many ways in scripture. Shepherds are those who care for sheep of course, and this is the poetic symbolism that David is trying to get us to understand--God shepherds His children. However, the word shepherd can also be used of a priest or king. In similar poetic fashion Ezekiel in chapter 34 points to a portion of Israel's downfall as due to a lack of adequate ministerial care that was to be given by the priests. My sheep wandered through all the mountains, and upon every high hill: yea, my flock was scattered upon all the face of the earth, and none did search or seek after them. Ezekiel 34:6 Ezekiel then predicts that "David" shall shepherd His people. Ezekiel 34:23 says, "And I will set up one shepherd over them, and he shall feed them, even my servant David; he shall feed them, and he shall be their shepherd." Jesus Christ , the Son of David, fulfills this position. So what is Jesus doing today? It is evident in the Bible that He is serving as our only priest and that He is shepherding His people through the power of the Holy Spirit. "Who is the that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us."Romans 8:34

It is important to see that the shepherding ministry of Jesus is always linked to his death. It is seen as a subsequent event. We now have a High Priest at the Father's right hand who makes intercession for us!
Notice, then, the placement of Psalm 23. It comes immediately after psalm 22 that outlines the sacrificial death of God's great prophet. Psalm 23 is the Psalm outlining the priestly ministry of Jesus Christ. Why then should I fear at all seeing I have such a great High Priest shepherding me daily. YHWH Rohi! The LORD is my shepherd! He is my great High Priest!

The Justice of the People--Cave Adullam

David therefore departed thence, and escaped to the cave Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father's house heard it, they went down thither to him. And every one that was in distress, and every one that was in debt, and every one that was discontented, gathered themselves unto him; and he became a captain over them: and there were with him about four hundred men.
1 Samuel 22:1-2

The justice of the people--it is the name of the church in Revelation that Jesus addresses for its backsliding and corrupted witness. So what connection is there between that church and the story of David in the cave of Adullam? They share a name!  Adullam is the Hebrew equivalent for "the Justice of the People."  By looking at Jesus at the door of an organization bearing His name and looking at David in the cave called the justice of the people we can draw several parallels.  In both narratives, the anointed King is not recognized by all, both are the outsider, and both can take those who understand they, too, are outsiders in a corrupted church and make them men and women of renowned in God.

Saul was still the anointed king of Israel, but God had sent His prophet, Samuel, to anoint David after Saul's unrepentance.  However, most of the people seemed to prefer Saul over the man after God's own heart.  Yet, even Israel's enemies knew who the proper king was.  The servants of King Achish of the Philistines confirmed this knowledge in the prior chapter.  "And the servants of Achish said unto him, Is not this David the king of the land? did they not sing one to another of him in dances, saying, Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands?"  (1 Samuel 21:11)  Is it not the same today?  Many bearing the name of Christ do not know Him nor recognize His Lordship, but the liberal, God haters know exactly who their anointed enemy is.

How many times have I heard a preacher use Revelation 3:20 to witness or give an altar call (I have used it this way myself).  "Jesus is knocking on the door of your heart.  Won't you invite Him in dear sinner?"  However, in context, this verse is not directed towards sinners.  It is directed towards a lukewarm church that does not fully understand His anointed Lordship.  See for your self--He is standing at the door of a church and knocking to get in.  Like David in the cave, Jesus Christ is seen as the outsider, the reject, the forgotten.  What an awful thought!  The Lord of Glory who died for the right to rule the hearts and lives of believers is outside of the human organization bearing His name and He is knocking to get in and be recognized as the only remedy for a sick church.  It is a shame!

When David was in the cave, rejected and alone, many who were dissatisfied with the world and the fleshly reign of Saul came to him.  It says that they were the distressed, the discontent, and the debtors.  All "spotted lambs" like the herd that Jacob gathered from his father-in-law, Laban.  Jesus is the same!  He cares for spotted lambs just like you and me!  He calls them to come out of a worldly organization and bids them to have a deep and longing relationship with Him.  He promises rest, providence, wisdom, and protection to those who choose to fellowship with Him.

Like those who joined to David, it takes us to see that there is nothing here for us in the present world.  We also need to see, as a local church has on their sign, that "the best things in life are not things."  The best thing in life is a personal and ongoing relationship with Jesus. We need to see our inadequacy and realize that Christ came to this world to empathize with us "rejects" by being one Himself as Isaiah reminds in  53:3, "He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not." We need to choose to make Him Lord and master.  We need Him to be captain over us.

Recently, I shared a dilemma that I had when I was first saved and still in the military.  In scripture Jesus is often painted as "Captain of the Lord's Host."  This term always bothered me--why a captain?  Why was Jesus not the general or one of higher rank?  It was then that the Holy Spirit brought it to my attention that it is not the generals nor high ranking officials that lead in the fight.  It is the captains who lead troops in the battle.  Jesus is not out there standing aloof--He is at the door waiting for an invitation to come in so that He can lead you from victory unto victory in Him.  Will you open the door?  That is Him knocking.  Do it quickly--He is Soon2Come!

And This Shall Be The Plague

And this shall be the plague wherewith the LORD will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth.
Zechariah 14:12

It is a prophecy that could not be understood until July 16, 1945 when the Trinity Tests were conducted in the Jornado del Meurto Desert of New Mexico.  Two towns in Japan, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, made the picture of the plague a bit more clearer.  Sadly, this scenario played out exactly as Zechariah saw.  Many civilians that day were escorted into eternity in this very manner.  The power was so awesome that some left shadows on the walls of the building walls though their bodies could not be found.  Yet, this is not the event that the prophet was shown.  God showed him the city of Jerusalem under siege when a nuclear war erupts.

What is the power behind a nuclear explosion anyways.  God's word is clear--all matter is held together by the Word of God. The splitting of an atom is the very awesome power of the creator's word!  "Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;"  Hebrew 1:3  "By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth."  Psalm 33:6

Today's news is a reminder that we are very near this attack on Jerusalem and a nuclear war.  Iran's rush to get nuclear weapons and their continual threats to destroy Israel has not escaped the GOD of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.  Their haste to get these instruments of death is actually a rush to fulfill scripture with the destruction of 80+% of their military.  It is also a reminder to prepare your heart and to witness to friends and family.  The Great Day of the LORD is near--even at the door.  Jesus Christ is Soon2Come!

Not About You!

Give unto the LORD, O ye mighty, give unto the LORD glory and strength. Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name; worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness.
Psalm 29:1-2

What a message!  I thought that I would share a message by Joe Mckeever that spoke along the same line of my last post.  Again, what an important message for us today!  This was shared with us in a monthly pastor's newsletter from our state overseer, Thomas Propes.  May it challenge you as it has me!

7 Things We Regularly Get Wrong About Worship
by Joe McKeever

Give unto the Lord the glory due to His name (Psalm 29:2).
"It's Sunday around noonish. As the congregation files out of the sanctuary heading toward the parking lot, listen closely and you will hear it.
It's a common refrain voiced near the exit doors of churches all across this land.
"I didn't get anything out of that today." "I didn't get anything out of the sermon." "I didn't get anything out of that service." "I guess her song was all right, but I didn't get anything out of it."
Sound familiar? Not only have I heard it countless times over these near-fifty years in the ministry, I probably have said it a few times myself.
This is like dry rot in a congregation. Like a termite infestation in the building. Like an epidemic afflicting the people of the Lord, one which we seem helpless to stop.
But let's try. Let's see if we can make a little difference where you and I live, in the churches where we serve and worship. We might not be able to help all of them, but if we bless one or two, it will have been time well spent.
1. You are Not Supposed to 'Get Anything Out of the Service'
Worship is not about you and me. Not about "getting our needs met." Not about a performance from the pastor and singer and choir and musicians. Not in the least.
2. Worship is About the Lord
"Give unto the Lord the glory due to His name." That Psalm 29:2 verse atop our article today is found also in I Chronicles 16:29 and Psalm 96:8. It deserves being looked at closely.
a) We are in church to give. Not to get.
Now, if I am going somewhere to "get," but find out on arriving, I am expected to "give," I am one frustrated fellow. And that is what is happening in the typical church service. People walk out the door frustrated because they didn't "get." The reason they didn't is that they were not there to "get," but to "give."
Someone should have told them.
b) We are giving glory to God. Not to man.
We know that. At least we say we do. How many times have we recited, "...for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory"? And how often have we sung, "Praise God from whom all blessings flow..."?
c) We do so because glory is His right. He is "worthy of worship."
This is the theme of the final book of the Bible.
  • "Who is worthy?" (Rev. 5:2)
  • "You are worthy...for you were slain, and have redeemed us" (Rev. 5:9).
  • "Worthy is the Lamb that was slain" (Rev. 5:12).
3. Self-centeredness Destroys All Worship
If my focus is on myself when I enter the church--getting my needs met, learning something, hearing a lesson that blesses me, being lifted by the singing--then Christ has no part in it. He becomes my servant, and the pastor (and all the other so-called performers) are there only for me. It's all about me.
We have strayed so far from the biblical concept of worship--giving God His due in all the ways He has commanded--it's a wonder we keep going to church. And it's an even greater wonder that our leaders keep trying to get us to worship.
The poor preacher! Trying to cater to the insatiable hungers of his people, even the best and most godly among them, is an impossible task. One week he gets it right and eats up the accolades. Then, about the time he thinks he has it figured out, the congregation walks out grumbling that they got nothing out of the meal he served today.
The typical congregation in the average church today really does think the service is all about them--getting people saved, learning the Word, receiving inspiration to last another week, having their sins forgiven, taking an offering to provision the Lord's work throughout the world.
Anything wrong with those things? Absolutely not. But if we go to church to do those things, we can do them. But we will not have worshiped.
Warren Wiersbe says, "If you worship because it pays, it will not pay."
4. Evangelism & Discipleship, Giving & Praying, Grow Out of Worship; Not the Other Way Around
The disciples were worshiping on the Day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit filled them and drove them into the streets to bear a witness to the living Christ (Acts 2).
Isaiah was in the Temple worshiping when God appeared to him, forgave his sins, and called him as a prophet to the people (Isaiah 6).
It was in the act of worship that the two distraught disciples had their eyes opened to recognize Jesus at their table (Luke 24).
5. We are to Give Him Worship and Glory in the Ways Scripture Commands
"Give to the Lord the glory due His name and bring an offering." So commands I Chronicles 16:29 and Psalm 96:8.
"The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit. A broken and contrite heart--these, O God, you will not despise." (Psalm 51:17)
Singing, praise, rejoicing. Praying, offering, humbling, loving. All these are commanded in worship at various places in Scripture.
The Lord Jesus told the Samaritan woman at Jacob's well, "Those who worship God must worship in spirit and in truth" (John 4:24). That is, with their inner being, the totality of themselves, their spirit, not just their lips or their bodies going through the motions. And in truth--the revealed truth of how God has prescribed worship to take place. He is not pleased with "just anything" that we claim as worship.
We must balance our worship between spirit (the subjective part: body, soul, emotions) and truth (the objective aspect: all that God has revealed in His word).
6. We Are the Ones Who Decide Whether We Worship upon Entering the House of the Lord
Don't blame the preacher if you don't worship. He can't do it for you.
No one else can eat my food for me, love my cherished ones in my place, or do my worshiping for me.
No pastor can decide or dictate whether we will worship by the quality of his leadership or the power of his sermon. Whether I worship in today's service has absolutely nothing to do with how well he does his job.
I am in charge of this decision. I decide whether I will worship.
When Mary sat before the Lord Jesus, clearly worshiping, He informed a disgruntled Martha that her sister had "chosen the good part," something that "will not be taken away from her" (Luke 10:42). That something special was time spent in worship. Such moments or hours are eternal.
Lest someone point out that Martha could have worshiped in her kitchen by her service for Christ, we do not argue, but simply point out that she was not doing so that day.
7. Remember: Worship is a Verb
And it's an active verb at that.
Worship is something we do, not something done to us.
In the worst of circumstances, I can still worship my God. In the Philippians prison, while their backs were still oozing blood from the beating they'd received, Paul and Silas worshiped (Acts 16:25).
Even if a church has no pastor and has to make do with a stuttering layman or some inept fill-in, I can still bow before the Lord, offer Him my praise, and give Him my all. I can humble before Him and I can bring my offering.
What I cannot do is leave church blaming my failure to worship on the poor singing, the boring sermon, or the noise from the children in the next pew. I am in charge of the decision whether I will worship, and no one else.
Someone has pointed out that ours is the only nation on earth where church members feel they have to have "worshipful architecture" before they can adequately honor the Lord. Millions of Christians across the world seem to worship just fine without any kind of building. Believers in Malawi meet under mango trees, according to retired missionary Mike Canady, and their worship is as anointed as anyone's anywhere. (What? No stained glass!)
Our insistence on worshipful music, worship settings, and worshipful everything are all signs of our disgusting self-centeredness.
It's disgusting because I see it in myself, and do not like it.
No one enjoys a great choir more than I. I love to hear a soloist transport us all into the Throneroom by his/her vocal offering in the service. A great testimony of God's grace and power thrills me. And of course, being a preacher, I delight in hearing a sermon that you feel is direct from the heart of God.
But if I require any one or all of those before I can worship, something is vastly wrong with me.
My friends, something is vastly wrong with us today."

Godlessness in the Last Days

To HIM Alone!

Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.
Jude 1:24-25

The letter of Jude is a great warning about the seriousness of deception in the last days.  Therefore, it is interesting to note that his insightful letter ends with a reminder that the Lord is the one who is to receive all glory.  God alone is to be our focus since it is He who has saved us and is well able to keep us by His mercy.  This short epistle is a reminder that the last days would be a time when the children of God would need to be sober and vigilant in fighting against selfishness in their walk with Christ and service to Him.  There would be great temptation to make "service" about us and not the Lord our GOD.

A  recent voice for the Lord, Leonard Ravenhill, made a statement about true service and true joy that still seers the heart. In his great sermon "The Judgement Seat of Christ" Ravenhill said the following:
""I'm embarrassed to be part of the Church today because I believe it's an embarrassment to a holy God. Most of our joy is clapping our hands and having a good time and then afterwards we talk all the nonsense of the world. We're overboard on laughter and happiness. There's an old saying in the world, "Laugh and the world laughs with you." I change it and say, "Laugh and the Church laughs with you, but weep and you weep alone." Because there isn't enough real joy in the house of God, we need entertainment. Entertainment is the devil's substitute for joy. Because there isn't enough power in the house of God, people are always looking for something to take its place. We point the finger at the world, but we need to turn to the Church and say we'd better all get sackcloth and ashes and humble ourselves and say "Almighty God!" When I see the Church in the New Testament, they didn't have stately buildings or paid evangelists or a lot of money. (They couldn't get on television and beg!) But I'll tell you what they did - they turned the world upside-down!"

God is the one who is to receive glory in and from the church.  "But pastor, we pray and praise and give God the glory."  You very well might, but for what purpose?  Do you truly enter into His courts to praise and give thinksgiving?  Are you there to give unto the Lord the glory due His name?  Or are we there with our hands out begging blessings and leaving irritated when we don't receive what we feel we were due?  If you were to enter His house to give unto the LORD, truly, you will leave full and well fed.  Careful observation may reveal, sadly, that the opposite is true.  God is not first place and church is more about getting our needs met than giving God the glory due his name.

The next time you enter a service, bow at your bedside, or read God's word remember that this is done more for Him than for you!  He is first always.  When we go to him with hands extended in praise and not in need, watch Him meet your need while you seek first the things of His kingdom!

There Is No Peace

The way of peace they know not; and there is no judgment in their goings: they have made them crooked paths: whosoever goeth therein shall not know peace.
Isaiah 59:8

The rumors of war have returned with a vengeance.  Can you hear them?  There is talk of a strike on Iran which in turn would ignite the Middle East and the world into a catastrophic encounter with the Almighty.  It may very well be why US troops are being brought from areas in the Middle East so quickly.  We don't want them caught in harm's way as war begins.

It is certain that Iran (ancient Persia) and a coalition of Middle Eastern nations have a divine appointment for destruction.  They will be certain of victory as they launch their massive attacks against Israel.  Many of these nations have been using the puppet of the UN to do their bidding.  They trust in vanity, and speak lies; they conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity--Isaiah 59:4. There are even rumors of a preemptive strike on Iran soon.  Yet, they will meet their ultimate demise on the northern hills of Israel as God shows a world denying HIS sovereign power and glory who is really is in control.

Add to this the threats from Syria, and we have the makings of the war of Isaiah 17.  Syria has threatened on multiple occasions to strike Tel Aviv should the UN or another power seek to interfere with their internal strife. Why Tel Aviv?  Assad knows that even his Muslim enemies would be compelled to attack Israel should he attack.  It is to get the pressure off of himself and redirected.  It would literally set the Middle East ablaze.  God, Himself, will enter the fray and you shall know it when Israel survives! "Woe to the multitude of many people, which make a noise like the noise of the seas; and to the rushing of nations, that make a rushing like the rushing of mighty waters! The nations shall rush like the rushing of many waters: but God shall rebuke them, and they shall flee far off, and shall be chased as the chaff of the mountains before the wind, and like a rolling thing before the whirlwind. And behold at eveningtide trouble; and before the morning he is not. This is the portion of them that spoil us, and the lot of them that rob us."  Isaiah 17:12-14

Before you think this nation, the Quartet members, or the UN will get through this unscathed, read that last sentence above again.  "This is the portion of them that spoil us, and the lot of them that rob us."  Making a de facto nation in the covenant land of Israel and treating Jerusalem like a bargaining chip is an affront to the Almighty.  He will surely remind the world about the reason for His title LORD of Hosts.  "The LORD is a man of war: the LORD is his name--Exodus 15:3."

There is so much more to say and report, but space won't permit it.  Please draw nigh to Christ as HE is surely Soon2Come!

What a promise!
And the Redeemer shall come to Zion, and unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob, saith the LORD. As for me, this is my covenant with them, saith the LORD; My spirit that is upon thee, and my words which I have put in thy mouth, shall not depart out of thy mouth, nor out of the mouth of thy seed, nor out of the mouth of thy seed's seed, saith the LORD, from henceforth and for ever.
