Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever. Hebrews 13:8
Immutability is one of God's very important attributes. He does not change on us from day to day. While men and women can change, the Lord is always consistent and trustworthy. Wouldn't it be awful if God did change His requirements for us from time to time? Thank the Lord for being ever true!
The verse, Hebrews 13:8, seems out of place at first. Look at it in its immediate context. "Remember them which have the rule over you, who have spoken unto you the word of God: whose faith follow, considering the end of their conversation. Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever. Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines. For it is a good thing that the heart be established with grace; not with meats, which have not profited them that have been occupied therein." Hebrews 13:7-9 Doesn't this statement seem to just pop in and interrupt a thought? Maybe the author was distracted and just put a filler verse in? No, he is speaking about believers being in subjection to godly authority in verse 7. He has asked them to follow the faith example of their leaders in Christ. Then he mentions that Jesus never changes. The message--if your pastor fails you; remember, Jesus never fails as He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Then he exhorts the believers to also be steadfast and unmovable like Jesus. Become established in His grace and beware of those who twist and contort the scriptures to their own foolishness.
Changing the meaning of scripture is another end time sign. As men approach the tribulation there will be a tendency to turn God's grace into a license for sin. Shall we sin that grace may abound? Paul said clearly God forbid! (Romans 6:2 & 6:15) Also note the warning of Jude 1:4, "For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ." If you do slip we have an advocate with the Father--Jesus Christ the righteous and immutable.
Many ministers and believers are failing the Lord today! They seem to believe that God has changed His mind about sin. "What was sinful in Sodom and Gomorrah need not apply to us", they think. Gloatingly, they believe, "we are more modern and civilized today and we seem to have better understanding of God's love". I must remind you, God does not change. He is both loving and awesome! Our God is a consuming fire. His anger is terrible and greatly to be feared. If murdering innocent children brought judgment to those throwing their children to idols like Molech or killing all the female children in preference of males as happened in Roman society, then God still hates abortion even when our media blatantly calls it a choice. If He judged suddenly Sodom and the tribe of Benjamin for homosexuality in the past, He will judge all those who practice this sin and fail to repent. Nearly all of the men in Benjamin were destroyed by the other tribes for this sin. It took God's intervention to keep this tribe in existence. (Judges 20-21)
There is a way out. Repent! Turn around! Walk back to Him in broken humility. Thank God! He has not changed His mind about saving those who call upon the name of the Lord!
