"Take Aaron and Eleazar his son, and bring them up unto mount Hor:" Numbers 20:25 Moses took two men with him up the mountain. Aaron had offered thousands of sacrifices for the people. Jesus offered one sacrifice that was greater than all sacrifices together. Eleazar had been serving as the chief over all of the priestly ministries, and this shadows the direction of the Holy Spirit over the church age. Things change when they go up mount Hor. Both are wearing their priestly robes, but Aaron is wearing the ephod and garments of the high priest. Jesus also climbed the mount of God wearing the vestments of the High Priest. John saw Jesus among the candlesticks wearing the garments of a priest in Revelation 1. Aaron dies on the mount, but his grave is never disclosed. Jesus appears to be dead to the world, but he is at the right hand of the father as our mediator, advocate, and intercessor. Eleazar comes back down the mountain as the anointed priest over Israel. Jesus will return as Lord over all and Earth's only Great High Priest forever because, "For he testifieth, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec." Hebrews 7:17
Like Elijah and Elisha being a shadow of the prophet, Aaron and Eleazar give us a shadow of the glory of Jesus Christ, God's anointed priest.
